FAQ

Frequently asked questions about our vocational language courses

A vocational language course is a German course funded by the BAMF that teaches both general and work-related German. It covers levels from B1 through to B2 and C1, and usually concludes with the German Test for Work.

Various groups of people can take part in the BAMF vocational language course. You need authorisation to take part, known as an ‘authorisation certificate’. This includes, for example:

  • Jobseekers and unemployed people who wish to improve their prospects on the labour market.
  • Employed people who wish to communicate more confidently with colleagues and line managers.
  • Apprentices and those seeking an apprenticeship who need a better command of German for their training.
  • People undergoing the recognition process who wish to have their foreign vocational qualification recognised in Germany.

You will also need to have the appropriate language level: at least B1 for the B2 vocational language course, and at least B2 for the C1 vocational language course. A placement test with us will show you where you stand.

A BAMF-funded vocational language course is either free of charge or involves a small co-payment, depending on your eligibility and personal circumstances. Under certain conditions, you can apply for full exemption from fees. We would be happy to advise you on the costs and funding options for your vocational language course.

To enrol on a B1 or B2 vocational language course, you need a valid eligibility certificate issued, for example, by the Jobcentre, the Employment Agency or the BAMF. This must be valid for the relevant course type and the intended number of teaching units (UE).

A B1 vocational language course usually comprises 400 teaching units (UE), whilst a B2 vocational language course comprises 400 or 500 teaching units (UE), depending on the course type. You will also need the appropriate level of German: usually A2 for the B1 course and B1 for the B2 course. Whether you can take part depends on your individual eligibility and the applicable funding criteria.

At iQ Lingua, you can attend a BAMF-funded vocational language course in Berlin or Mainz. In Berlin, we offer vocational language courses at our centres in Pankow and Spandau. Choose the centre that is most convenient for you and ask for advice on the available courses and start dates.

The integration course teaches everyday German up to B1 level and provides information about living in Germany. The vocational language course builds on this and prepares students for the world of work.

Vocational language courses – learning German for everyday working life

A vocational language course helps you to expand your existing knowledge of German in a way that is specifically tailored to your professional life. You will learn to express yourself with greater confidence when applying for jobs, when interacting with colleagues and line managers, and in typical workplace situations.

Our B1 and B2 vocational language courses build on your existing language skills and prepare you, step by step, for the linguistic demands of everyday working life. The courses are funded by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) and, depending on your personal circumstances, can be attended free of charge.

Vocational language course – exam and certificate

Upon completion of your B1 or B2 vocational language course, you will sit the German Test for the Workplace (DTB) at the relevant language level. This test assesses your German language skills in the areas of listening, reading, writing and speaking.

If you pass the exam, you will receive a recognised language certificate which you can use to demonstrate your work-related German language skills, for example when applying for jobs or to employers.
